What does Medicare Part B cover?

Medicare Part B helps cover medically necessary services and preventive care. This includes doctor visits, outpatient care, lab work, X-rays, mental health services, durable medical equipment, and some home health and rehab services like physical therapy.

Part B also covers preventive services to help catch health issues early. Screenings like mammograms, flu shots, and yearly wellness visits are included. If your provider accepts Medicare assignment, you usually pay nothing for most preventive services.

In 2026, the standard monthly premium for Part B is $202.90. Most people pay this amount, but if your income is higher, you may pay more due to IRMAA, the income-related monthly adjustment amount.

Understanding what Part B covers and how much it costs can help you make better choices when reviewing your Medicare options. It’s also important to review your income status each year, especially if you think you may qualify to appeal IRMAA charges after retirement or other life changes.
